What Is Squalane ?
Squalane is present in human sebum at approximately 5%, appearing as a colorless, transparent, oily, viscous liquid that is insoluble in water. It has relatively stable chemical properties and belongs to the triterpenoid hydrocarbon class.
Squalane raw material is commonly used as an oily base ingredient in cosmetics, characterized by low irritation and good skin affinity.
The "Announcement on the Catalogue of Used Cosmetic Ingredients" issued by the State Food and Drug Administration in 2014 and the 2010 edition of the "International Catalogue of Chinese Names of Cosmetic Ingredients" by CTFA, the European Union, Japan and the China Perfume and Cosmetics Association all list squalane as a cosmetic ingredient, and there are no reports that it is unsafe for external use.
Two Sources Of Squalane Raw Materials
Animal-derived squalane (Squalane) is sourced from animals, primarily found in shark liver oil. Deep-sea sharks are a significant source of squalane; however, it takes 3,000 sharks to extract 1 ton of squalane. As a result, several EU countries have implemented policies banning the use of pure shark-derived squalane as a cosmetic ingredient.
In addition to squalane, scientists have discovered that many plants can also be used to extract squalane raw materials. Plants such as cucumber seeds and olive oil contain large amounts of squalane, so there are now many plant-based squalane products available on the market.
