What is Ambroxane?
Ambergris is a strongly scented substance produced in the intestines of sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus). Its function is to protect the intestinal mucosa from the indigestible remains of the mollusks consumed by sperm whales, hardening the surrounding area and integrating it into the tissue.
The term "ambergris" originates from the Old French "ambre gris," meaning "gray amber," in contrast to "yellow amber," which refers to resinous amber. It is used in the production of perfumes.
Chemically, ambergris is primarily composed of a mixture of waxy, unsaturated, high-molecular-weight alcohols, with the main chemical component being ambergris ether. Other chemical components, such as epidermal sterols and conjugated sterols, have also been identified, but ambergris ether is the substance responsible for the characteristic odor of ambergris. The mechanism behind the formation of the typical ambergris odor is illustrated in the figure.

Information of Ambroxane
Natural ambergris is a high-grade fragrance derived from grayish-white soft stones found in the intestines of sperm whales, with extremely limited availability. Ambergris ether is a synthetic fragrance with the aroma of ambergris, used as a substitute for natural ambergris. It is a colorless to white crystalline substance. Its relative molecular mass is 236.39. Melting point: 75–76°C. Boiling point: 120°C (1.33×10² Pa). Flash point: 161°C. Specific rotation: -29° (c=1, toluene).
Synthetic ambergris ether [(-)-Ambroxane] is an excellent fixative and is considered the highest-rated synthetic ambergris fragrance among all synthetic ambergris fragrances. It is one of the best substitutes for natural ambergris. Since ambergris ether is non-irritating and non-allergenic to humans, it is very suitable for use in skin, hair, and fabric fragrances and is widely used in the cosmetics industry.
Uses of Ambroxane
Ambroxan's "ambergris effect" can greatly enhance the diffusion of fragrances. It is used in high-end perfumes and cosmetics and is non-irritating to the human body. It is suitable for adding fragrance to skin, hair, and fabrics, such as soap, talcum powder, creams, and shampoos, as well as for fixing fragrances.
Application of Ambergris Fragrance Raw Materials in Cigarettes: Labdanum-type substances are key aromatic components in aromatic tobacco, and Ambroxane is one of the most prominent aromatic substances among them, making a significant contribution to the smoke of blended cigarettes.
Ambroxane is also widely used in flue-cured tobacco cigarettes and the perfume industry. Ambergris is used in the flavoring and blending of cigarettes, harmonizing with the characteristic aroma of tobacco and masking off-odors. Even in small quantities, it improves the aromatic quality of tobacco, making it particularly suitable for flavoring blended cigarettes and enhancing the flavor of Oriental-type tobacco. During cigarette smoking, the fragrance precursor ambroxan diol carbonate decomposes at high temperatures and undergoes ring closure to produce ambroxan fragrance components, resulting in cigarette smoke with distinct woody and amber aromas.
